Oreo cookies are available in more than 100 countries across the globe, and deemed by many Americans to be the original “sandwich cookie” (although those Americans have evidently never heard of the good old British custard cream, which predates it by at least four years).  There are many theories as to the origin of the name, which we won’t go into, but basically no-one is sure.  Maybe they were playing Scrabble and these were the tiles they had left over.
